Algeria becomes the first North African side to qualify for the Sudan 2011 CHAN tournament despite a 1-2 loss in Tripoli against Libya on Saturday.

The Algerians went through on the away goal rule after both ties ended 2-2 and with a lone goal victory from the first leg. Needing a 2-0 win to go through, the Libya were on course before a late consolation by the visitors dented their hopes of a second successive participation in the tournament designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.

Central defender Younes Chibani shot the Libyans into the lead by converting a penalty on 26 minutes before Ahmed Zuway doubled the lead two minutes after the hour mark.

On the stroke of full time, striker Sofiane Hanister grabbed the much-needed consolation with a header that beat Libyan goalie Samir Aboud and silenced the half-packed stadium.

Algeria thus becomes the ninth team after hosts Sudan , defending champions DR Congo, Ghana , Mali , Senegal , Niger , Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire to have secured their places at the tournament to be held in Sudan in 2011. Meanwhile, Morocco and Tunisia will battle it out for the remaining Northern zone ticket.
